We were just about done grieving through miscarriages when my wife finally survived a full term of pregnancy. Josh was a gift albeit delivered to us in delicate health. He just turned 2 and got better in the care of very doting parents.

I worried that my daughter would not be able to survive by herself when she left home to study in a university upstate.

I was very excited to land my first job after graduating from college. I did not mind what kind of job it was as long as the field would not be alien to the course that I have finished.

After seven years of marriage, I noticed that my wife had changed the perfume that she used to wear for many years. I got suspicious that this was a sign that she could be cheating on me. And I had heard of the seven-year itch.

Recently, at a writers’ conference, one of my colleagues stood up and asked, “What is spyware? What is adware? How can I tell if I have them, and how can I remove them?”
 
Well, have you ever wondered where all the information that you send out into cyber space goes? When you fill out a survey for the smallest of websites for a “free” imported flyswatter, did you ever imagine that simple action might take you and your PC into a spyware spin?

Spyware is any data collection program that secretly gathers information about you and relays it to advertisers or other interested parties. Sometimes, the spyware system is so effective that it will say, “thank you” after you give it your life’s most critical information. What it should really say is, “thank you for giving me all your hard-earned money and peace of mind,” because, by filling out that form and sending it in, you have just installed spyware.
 
Spyware and adware (a software that installs itself to crowd your computer and slow it down to the point of turning it into a large, electronic paperweight) are types of malware that are designed to invade your PC and your privacy–even steal your identity. Adware usually displays banners or unwanted pop-up windows. In many cases, such invasive unwanted programs perform both functions.
 
You can unknowingly install spyware when you install new software, most commonly freeware or shareware P2P (peer-to-peer) file-sharing programs. Many of these programs are designed to track your internet browsing habits, such as frequented sites and favorite downloads, and then provide advertising companies with your marketing data.
 
So how do you remove spyware and adware? Unfortunately, you cannot fully remove most spyware and adware programs by using the uninstall option on your computer; you have to flush it out with antispyware.

Did you ever encounter a situation when you actually wished you might anonymously hear talks taking place on other side of the wall or at some far off location? Well, I know that for most of us the idea did occur at some specific point in our lives.

In the past, electronics fans used radio bugs for this reason. These tiny devices needed to be smartly installed at a location and broadcast all nearby sounds to a receiver over standard radio frequencies. Their range of operation was however restricted by limited power available to the gizmo. Commonest bugs had a selection of less than 2 miles. Moreover the static noise broadcast alongwith voice was a constant nuisance for the listener.

And if this were not enough, it was always a tricky job to hide the bug in a manner which ensured it did not get detected by unsuspecting subjects of surveillance. The fact still is that bugs available in market were less than science fair toys.

Sophisticated surveillance kit was well outside common man’s reach, available mostly to central agencies or existing in 007 like Hollywood spy movies. Not any more!
