Home Security: Dealing with Ex-Boyfriends

A lot of us have been there. Have you ever had an ugly breakup? One where your boyfriend or girlfriend will not let the relationship go? This can be annoying, and even dangerous if your ex was abusive and controlling.

Breaking things off with a boyfriend who is controlling can be a scary prospect. This is especially true for someone who perhaps has already been physically, emotionally, or even sexually abused by a controlling boyfriend. That is why is is important to keep safety measures in place to protect you from getting hurt by him again.

The first thing to do is to have a support system put in place. Let your friends and family be there to support you. Ask them to be there with you when you break things off with them, to ensure he does not try to do anything harmful to you.

After the break up be smart about home security. If they were controlling there is a good chance they may have made copies of your keys. Be sure to change the locks of your home.

Being Safe at College

Home safety on a college campus is important. Just because you are living in a dorm does not mean you should forget basic home safety tips. Be aware of your surroundings. Avoid secluded areas, especially at night. Walk in well-lit areas, and avoid walking alone. Home safety means following your instincts. If it does not feel safe, don’t go there. Being with a group you know is safer than being alone.

Be aware that alcohol and other drugs can allow you to be taken advantage of. Never leave your drink unattended because of “date rape drugs”. If you are on a date, let a friend or roommate know. Tell them where you are planning on going, with whom, and when you are expected to come back.

Avoid going on dates with strangers; get to know each other in a more public setting first. When you go out, let a trusted friend know where you are going and when you expect to be back. Walk with confidence, and keep your keys handy. If you are being followed, cross the street, run to an occupied house or store. Home safety tips still apply with apartments and dorms.
